Welcome to the first newsletter of the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (versión en español abajo).

Happy International Women’s Day

Gender equality and tax justice are top of our agenda with two events as we celebrate International Women’s Day.

We will also host a Women, Equality and Tax Justice workshop at the upcoming World Social Forum in Tunisa.

Latest News

It continues to be an interesting time in the world of tax justice as the fallout from #SwissLeaks and the revelations about HSBC are registered in numerous countries.

And our committed partner Public Services International draws our attention to this breaking story on the Unhappy Meal on taxes on the McDonalds menu.

Consultations on the OECD’s Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) process have been held in Asia and Latin America. Global Alliance members in both regions have demanded that the process do more to take the interests of developing countries into account.

Our Campaign

The Global Alliance for Tax Justice calls on world leaders to make multinationals pay their share! Our main campaign focus for the next few months will be the UN’s Financing for Development (FfD) summit in Addis Adaba in mid-July 2015.

Broadly, we want the process to promote:

Global solutions – the global problem of tax base erosion requires global solutions. This means a properly mandated and resourced UN process to govern tax reforms that offer a fair deal for all countries.

More transparency – this means an end to the secrecy that allows corporations to hide their ownership, where they make their profits and to stash cash offshore.

Fair national tax systems – this means putting an end to rising inequality with fair and redistributive taxation within countries.

Public investment in services and sustainable development

A draft FfD policy position paper is being circulated internally to GATJ regional network members, with a deadline for comments Wednesday March 11.

Each GATJ region is organising campaigns according to their own priorities through the coming together of our regional campaign circles.

If you’d like to get involved in tax justice campaigning in your region, please contact your local co-ordinator.

Regional network updates

Asia – Jubilee South held their annual general meeting in early March. Asian members sent out a letter regarding the lack of inclusiveness of BEPS regional consultations.

North America – a warm welcome to Rebecca Wilkins who takes over as Director of The FACT Coalition and Tax Justice Network-USA.

Europe – In the wake of #LuxLeaks, campaigners have begun planning how to stand in solidarity with the whistleblower Antoine Deltour, and call for greater whistleblower protection. An EU special committee is also investigating the revelations.

Latin America – Members issued this letter of protest concerning the BEPS consultation process.

Africa – Tax Justice Network-Africa is now working to ensure the full implementation of the Mbeki High Level Report recommendations on illicit financial flows.

Events

This week it’s all about gender and tax justice with two exciting events exploring how tax policies impact women and men differently.

Global Alliance at the World Social Forum – join us for a series of informative tax justice events in Tunis, March 24-28.

Members of the Global Alliance met recently at the Vienna conference “Tax Justice to Promote Social Justice.” See the conference link for reports and presentations posted there.

Your movement for tax justice is doing a wonderful job of creating awareness of the pernicious effects of tax evasion and tax avoidance and is strenghthening the forces seeking tax justice.
