Welcome to the thirteenth edition of our monthly Arabic podcast/radio show Taxes Simply الجباية ببساطة contributing to tax justice public debate around the world. Taxes Simply #13 — The death of an econometric model, and the revival of a Mubarak family BVI company
In the 13th edition of Taxes Simply we start with a summary of the most important tax and economy news from the region and the world. Our news includes:
- The return of protests and strikes against wage freeze in Tunisia
- The World Bank expects growth in the MENA region despite its fears of a long list of risks
- Protests against increased cost of living continue in Sudan; 4) Egypt’s foreign currency reserves fall for the first time in two years.
In the second segment of the programme Walid Ben Rhouma discusses with Osama Diab the real-life implications and the changes in the global economic conditions that caused the breaking down of the Phillips Curve, which is an econometric model that tries to capture the relationship between inflation and unemployment.
In the third section of the programme, we interview the investigative journalist Ahmed Eid about his most recent investigation linked to Panama Papers on a company and property belonging to the Mubarak family in the British Virgin Islands and Paris respectively.

في العدد الثالث عشر من الجباية ببساطة نعود لنبدأ بملخص لأهم الأخبار الضرائب والاقتصاد من المنطقة والعالم، وتشمل أخبارنا المتفرقة: ١) عودة الاحتجاجات والاضرابات ضد تجميد الأجور في تونس؛ ٢) البنك الدولي يتوقع زيادة النمو الاقتصادي في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا رغم تخوقه من قائمة طويلة من المخاطر؛ ٣) استمرار الاحتجاجات الاقتصادية ضد نظام البشير في السودان؛ ٤) انخفاض الاحتياطي النقدي لأول مرة في مصر منذ عامين.
يجري وليد بن رحومة في القسم الثاني من البرنامج حوارا مع أسامة دياب حول تراجع أهمية منحنى فيليبس كنموذج لتوقع العلاقة بين نسب التضخم والبطالة، وكيف يعكس هذا التراجع في النموذج تغيرات عميقة في الاقتصاد العالمي على أرض الواقع، وفي القسم الثالث والأخير من العدد يجري بن وليد بن رحومة حوارا مع الصحفي الاستقصائي أحمد عيد عن تحقيق جديد مرتبط بوثائق بنما أجراه بخصوص شركات وعقارات عائلة مبارك في الجزر العذراء البريطانية وباريس.
