How Inequality Became THE Issue – Five Years of The Spirit Level

Date: 10 March, 2014

Time: 6.30 – 8.30pm

Venue: Portcullis House, The Thatcher Room, London SW1A 2LW

Speakers include:

  • Professor Kate Pickett
  • Professor Richard Wilkinson
  • Jon Cruddas MP (Labour Policy Review Co-ordinator)
  • Julian Huppert MP (Liberal Democrat Manifesto Working Group member)
  • Conservative MP (TBC)

Since its publication in 2009, The Spirit Level has sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. Described as an idea “big enough to change political thought,” it highlighted how the UK’s extreme levels of income inequality damage our health, education and society.

Five years ago, economic inequality was an issue little understood and even less discussed. Today the likes of Barack Obama, the IMF and the luminaries of Davos acknowledge its pernicious and corrosive effects on our economy and democracy. So what’s changed?

Join The Equality Trust for a discussion event with The Spirit Level’s authors, Professors Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson on how our understanding of inequality has changed, and how the ‘rich and the rest’ has become a crucial part of the political and national debate.

This is a free event, and refreshments will be provided. Places are limited. To register, please visit here or reply to [email protected]
